Perrine Grand

Cabane du Grand Mountet, Zinal, Switzerland
High altitude mountain hut keeper

For five years, Perrine has been the keeper of the Grand Mountet hut. During the spring and summer seasons, she welcomes skiers, mountaineers and other hikers who want to enjoy the unique setting of the mountains of the Imperial Crown.

After a nomadic life made of travels and seasonal jobs, I put down my suitcases in Fribourg for love. Five months a year I leave the banks of the Sarine to take my quarters at the Grand Mountet. I am lucky enough to find the mountains there to practice a committed profession: hut keeper. Up there, I do everything I can to ensure that my guests have a good experience during their stay. The isolation of the hut and its location facing the Dent Blanche, the Obergabelhorn and the Zinalrothorn make it a privileged place. At the foot of the Grand Mountet, the numerous glaciers intensify the mineral atmosphere. This is what I like: to hear the perpetual movement of nature, to be close to the elements and to get attuned to them. As a guardian, I have a front row seat to this extraordinary spectacle: its beauty always captivates me, while its deterioration, accelerated by global warming, saddens me. To witness and make the greatest number of people aware of these changes is truly important to me and is an integral part of my job.
